Technotronic - Rockin' Over The Beat (Rockin' Over Manchester Hacienda Mix) / 12 Inch Extended Remix (HQ Audio)

Belgian musician, songwriter, and producer Jo Bogaert – who sometimes uses the stage name Thomas de Quincey – created Technotronic in 1989. It was originally his own studio project, but when an instrumental of what would become Pump Up The Jam achieved some club success, he realized the sound he'd created might have commercial potential. Bogaert had previously played in bands in various genres, including blues and new wave. He'd released an album under his own name five years earlier and had written a theatre production soundtrack in 1988. To help develop his new sound, Bogaert teamed up with Congolese rapper and singer Manuela Kamosi (a.k.a. Ya Kid K) and Welsh rapper, songwriter, and producer Eric Martin (a.k.a. MC Eric). The trio wrote and recorded a 12-track album, which spawned four UK top 20 hits: Pump Up The Jam, Get Up (Before The Night Is Over), This Beat Is Technotronic, and this track, Rockin' Over The Beat. Ya Kid K provided lyrics and vocals for all but one of these hits. This Beat Is Technotronic featured MC Eric's rhymes and vocals and was labeled as such. Whilst Ya Kid K was a key figure in the band, she wasn't featured in marketing for the breakthrough hit, Pump Up The Jam. This track was credited to Technotronic feat. Felly. Felly was a fashion model whose vocals didn't appear on the album, but she was the 'face' of the act and album sleeve. Rockin' Over The Beat was Technotronic's fourth hit and reached number 9 in the UK chart in July 1990. The version featured here is the Rockin' Over Manchester Hacienda Mix by Bernard Sumner of New Order and Electronic. Electronic had a highly successful debut album in 1990, and this remix features some signature drum and synth sounds from that record. There are three mixes on the 12" single, the other two being the Rockin' Over Manchester Piccadilly Mix and the Rockin' Over Manchester Instrumental Mix. A 7" Bernard Sumner mix also exists and was actually released as the single mix in Belgium, whilst other territories featured an edit of the original album mix. Such was Technotronic's success in 1990, Madonna invited them to support the UK leg of her Blond Ambition tour, and they played three dates with her at Wembley whilst this track was in the charts. Ya Kid K and MC Eric were later married and had a son together. Whilst they are each now involved in other projects, 1990 was quite the year for those involved in the Technotronic family at that time. Year: 1990 Label: Swanyard Cat no: SYRTR14
